Join the Chapel Choir
If you are a University of Bristol student who will be studying at Bristol for a full academic year or longer, then you are very welcome to audition to become a Choral Scholar in the Chapel Choir. This opportunity is open to students in all years, undergraduates, postgraduates taught, and research postgraduates, and there is no age limit – mature students are also very welcome to audition. Members of academic and professional staff in the university are also welcome on the same basis.
Exceptionally, other singers of similar standard to that expected of the Choral Scholars are invited to join us - please contact the Director of Chapel Music for a discussion.
The Chapel Choir entry is the result of a successful audition only.
There is no need to be religious or a person of faith to be a Choral Scholar, we simply ask that you are prepared to respect the ethos and traditions of the religious places in which we sing.
Auditions for the start of 2021-2022 are expected to take place during the first two weeks of the Autumn Term, or at other times mutually to be agreed. Auditions during the academic year will be arranged on an ad hoc basis.
The choir attracts singers of a high musical standard. In the 2020-21 academic year, around 50 students auditioned for the maximum 16 places for Choral Scholars. Please look in the Octagon in the Victoria Rooms for a sign-up sheet (at the beginning of the academic year, and at other times during the year), or fill in the Join Us form, or email the Director of Chapel Music.
Prospective Choral Scholars will ideally have some training in choral music at school or elsewhere, but this is not a requirement for auditioning. Familiarity with the Anglican choral tradition is desirable, but not essential. A willingness to continue vocal development and general musical skills throughout the membership period is expected.
Audition requirements are as follows (it is anticipated that an audition would last a maximum of 20 minutes):
- 2 short contrasting pieces to be prepared by the applicant (own choice), to be notified to the Director of Music in advance
- Ear tests
- Psalm singing – chanting Anglican and plainsong
- Sight-singing tests
In addition to vocal quality, the expectations at audition are:
- confident sight singing skills
- good general musicianship
- the enthusiasm and ability to ensure high, professional standards when working in a small group
