Being a member of the Chapel Choir

The Chapel is located in the grounds of Wills Hall in Clifton, part of the university's North Residential Village. The choir is an auditioned ensemble of up to 16 choral scholars:

  • 4 sopranos
  • 4 altos
  • 4 tenors
  • 4 basses

Being a Choral Scholar means enjoying the privilege of singing services and anthems in the superb Dame Monica Wills Chapel, and having the opportunity to sing high-standard choral music as part of one of the finest musical ensembles in the south west of England. Almost every week during term time we sing services in the beautiful chapel with its splendid acoustic for music. We also sing occasionally elsewhere in the university, and farther afield.

As well as providing music at services, we also when possible give concerts around the region. We tour during most years, both nationally and abroad, and provide Choral Scholars with solo opportunities where possible and appropriate.

The recreational life of the choir supports and mirrors its musical ethos, where working and singing together creates cohesive friendships.  We enjoy many social events, some in the Hall, and others elsewhere.

Expectations of a Choral Scholar

Choral Scholars are expected, as a matter of course, to attend* all rehearsals and choral services scheduled in the Chapel, to use their skills and accomplishments to maintain the professional reputation and prestige of the Chapel Choir.

The Chapel Choir is free to join and you do not need to join as a member of the Students' Union to do so.

You need neither to be religious nor a person of faith to join in the choir, we simply ask that you strive to be respectful of the places of worship in which you may sing.
